In 630 AD a monastery was found by the King of East Anglia, his name was King Sigeberht.
The foundations of the areas current name were from that of King Edmund who rule towards the end of the 9th century. The king passed in 869. However it was some decades later that his remains were moved to the monastery.
Two centuries later the monastery was then replaced with an Abbey, by King Canute. The Abbey was a pilgrimage site and the town grew around its famous landmark.
Getting there.
